Multi-community Membership

Modified on Sun, 24 Mar at 12:55 AM

Raftr supports the ability to be a member of multiple communities at once and makes it easy to switch between them. There are several reasons you might be a member of multiple communities, and some of the most popular reasons include:

  • A Community Space Admin managing two or more communities (like an admitted students community and a parents and families community)
  • An alum of one institution who is also a current student at another
  • An Community Space Admin who is a member of our Raftr 4 Raftr Admins training community in addition to their own

Switching Between Communities

Access the Community Switcher by selecting the logo of your active community in the top left corner of the header navigation bar. If you are joined to multiple communities, you will see them listed there and can select any one to automatically switch to that community.

The same process works on the Admin Portal (available to administrative users on the web platform only). Community Space Admins who manage multiple communities can click the logo in the top left corner to switch between dashboards for those communities.

Commingled Content

While some content types like Rafts and Posts are tied to a specific community, other content is accessible across multiple communities.

Profile Information

Information that you share on your Profile can be viewed across all of your communities. However, you can hide any information from any community by updating the visibility when you edit your Profile. Next to each item, you will see the number of communities it is visible for. Select the number to check or uncheck each community's visibility. The visibility will update after you save your Profile.

Profile information that is hidden from at least one community will not be visible in Search.

Notifications

You will receive notifications across all the communities you are a member of. Tapping on a community-specific notification will automatically transfer you to that community.

You can filter your notifications list by selecting the Notifications (bell) icon on the header, then tapping the Community dropdown filter (Web platform) or selecting an individual community filter (iOS/Android).

When you update your general notification settings, it will automatically update them for all communities.

Chat

Your DMs (including group messages) exist across all of your communities so you can see all of your personal messages in a single inbox. You can even create direct messages between members of multiple communities, as long as you overlap in at least one community with each member.

Search

When you search for something in Raftr, it will search across every community you are a member of, not just your active community. To only see results from a specific community, you must first choose a primary filter based on what you are searching for (e.g. Rafts, People, Posts, etc.). Once you select a primary filter, you will see additional filter buttons, including one for Community. Select the Community filter and choose the specific community you want to filter by.
