Direct Messages (DMs)

Modified on Sun, 24 Mar 2024 at 06:29 PM

Raftr offers both direct messaging (private chat between you and one other person) and group messaging. You can find your Direct Messages (DMs), group messages, and Raft Channel messages (ordered by recency) on your Home page. You can create a new DM by selecting the +Create button on the web platform or the add new (+) icon at the bottom of the Posts or Home screen.

If you choose to send a message to someone who is not yet following you, they will receive a notification requesting their permission to receive a message from you, which they will need to click or tap to approve before they can view your message.

How to Create a Direct Message

  • Create or add new (+) button ー On the web platform, select the +Create button on the screen header, then the Message option. On the mobile platform, select the add new (+) icon at the bottom of the Posts or Home screen and then select the Message option. You’ll see a list of suggested people you may want to send a message to. You can use the search feature there to find the right person.
  • Member profile  You can send a direct message to a member by clicking or tapping their profile image from anywhere on Raftr and then clicking or tapping the Message button on their profile. If you are not already following them and you message them, Raftr will notify them that you have messaged them and ask for their approval before allowing them to view your message.

Direct messages (DMs) can be sent to anyone in any community you belong to in Raftr, so if you belong to multiple communities, you don't need to have the same active community as someone to send each other messages.

Updating Your Notification Preferences for Direct Messages

In addition to customizing your notifications for Rafts and Channels, you can also customize your personal chat group and DM notifications. Group chat works exactly the same as updating message preferences for a Channel. Open the personal chat group you want to adjust and then select the More menu (...). Select Chat under Notification Preferences to mute, bundle, or increase the amount of notifications you receive from that specific group.

For direct messages, on the app, select the More menu (...) within the conversation to mute, report, block the member, or hide the conversation. Go to the Notifications > Settings > Messages to adjust overall notification preferences for DM conversations. On the web platform, you'll find all the Notifications settings on the More (...) menu within the DM conversation.
